As a kid, Dylan wanted a skateboard for Christmas, but ended up with a unicycle because “skateboards are dangerous.” Phillips unknowingly started his acrobatic career, at the age of 6, training as a competitive gymnast in Northern California. For 16 years, He was an All-Around gymnast, winning State Championships, represented California as a Regional All-Star team member and competed at Jr. Olympic Nationals. As an adult, he found an opportunity to travel and turn his gymnastics background, into a profession, working worldwide as a flying trapeze performer and circus instructor for Club Med. While working for this resort his favorite circus skills, other than flying trapeze, included knife juggling, fire eating and knife throwing.
Starting his circus life as a trapeze flyer, he later performed several different acts including Russian swing, acrobatic poles and trampoline for SeaWorld in Cirque de La Mer. At the same time, he was also working as a stuntman in the live show Fantasmic at Disneyland, sometimes performing in 7 shows a day, between the two theme parks. While doing circus work for a national music tour, Phillips and Lazarus crossed paths, thus striking the perfect match for the opportunity of a flying trapeze school in the Phoenix area. It was through this friendship that we have been able to create the first outdoor circus school of Arizona, open to the public. Dylan never would’ve imagined as a kid that a gift of a unicycle would eventually roll him up a path into a lifelong career, as a circus performer, trapeze instructor and co-founder of Trapeze U.
